Always Sprinting, Never Stopping
By Alexa
Hopeful for a good day.
Knowing that today is the day.
Today I will be running to my greatest extent.
Today I won't give up and I will not walk.
I know that today is the day, my day.
I prepare as I get in starting position on the orange baseline.
Ready, set, go!
I hear the whistle blow and my legs are off the ground.
I keep my pace steady and even, knowing I have another two laps to go.
Two more laps around the green, large field. I feel my heart rate increase.
My mind focused on finishing this first lap.
I feel my body cross the line, two more to go.
I soar in delight knowing that this is my second lap. One lap left.
My body lifts me off the ground, even though my legs feel like they're about to fall off. I keep running, trying not to mind the pain searing through my legs.
The crowd cheers as I pass another runner.
As they do, I feel my energy lifting. Giving me a whole new burst of energy.
I sprint towards the line and I cross it.
Last one, this is the run that counts.
I use all my energy and run as fast as my legs can carry me.
I pass another person who pants heavily.
I see my siblings in the crowd, cheering me on.
My legs move automatically with each call of my name.
My eyes are set directly on getting to that line.
I push all the energy I can manage and burst into a full on sprint.
The line disappears from my view and suddenly i'm past the line I've finished! I've won second place.
The cheering from the sidelines gets louder.
I watch as the last runners finish their run. I immediately go to my water bottle.
"Good job" coming from everyone around me.

About a year ago I was in the Glenview Public Library
I looked around and saw an old man
He wasn’t sitting with anyone just by himself
He was happily reading his newspaper as if he was home
I think about that man to this day
He let the world flow around him
Do You?

The swish of a racquet, the soaring of the ball,
I must get to it by the time it starts to fall.
Soaring through the court as if I had wings,
Tennis is on the scale of trampolines, and magical things.
Bringing my raqcuet back and following through,
Turning it clockwise to have some top spin too.
As I wait for the the ball's return as I get ready to attack,
Prepared to send the ball back with a well aimed smack!
Tennis really is an amazing sport,
Where you can only focus on the ball, your opponent, and the court.

8th Grade Graduation Reflections
The end of the year is near, and that means everyone is moving up one grade. Even Springman’s beloved eighth graders, or rather, Glenbrook South’s incoming freshman. The transition from middle school to high school can be a frightening one to say the least, but some people are prepared for the challenges to come when transitioning to a completely new school. Others, such as myself, have no idea how they are going to survive the incoming suffering that is to be expected from high school. However, the school year is not over yet. Here are some ways eighth graders are finishing the school year strong and preparing for high school.*

- In what ways do you plan on finishing the school year strong?
- Are you preparing for high school now, during the summer, or not at all? If you do plan on preparing, how?
- Is there anything in high school that you are looking forward to?
- What about the end of eighth grade are you excited for?
- Is there anything that you’re gonna miss about Springman? Do you have any last words of advice to the sixth or seventh graders?
LlamaGirl60
- “I plan on not dying so I can graduate alive. I also plan on raising 400 llamas on my own llama farm because llamas are cool and they help me with my homework.
- “Nope. Nope. Nope. I’m gonna wing it and see what happens.”
- “I’m excited about actually having electives that I can choose from. Also more clubs. If there isn’t already a llama club then I will make one because we have that option at GBS.”
- “I’m really excited to go to Great America with the entire eighth grade. Because that means less school and more fun. But I won’t be looking forward to the post-graduation party unless I can bring a llama.”
- “I’m really not gonna miss anything at Springman. Um, to the sixth graders, seventh and eighth grade is harder than sixth. And to the seventh graders, if you are doing good right now then you will probably be fine next year in eighth grade.”
IWroteTheDeathOfAVictoriousEmperorWithNewClothesAndAGoodTimeNotTragedies
- “I’m trying to focus mainly on my school work and I’m trying not to be distracted by high school. I really need to concentrate on the present rather than worrying too much about the future.”
- “I am preparing the only way I can right now and that’s studying and working hard in school. Over the summer I plan on doing absolutely nothing and enjoying my time before high school completely consumes me with its evil powers.
- “Literally one thing. And it’s graduating from high school.”
- “Just the feeling of finally moving on.”
- “I’m going to miss all of the great teachers I had but I’ll never never forget the memories I made here. For the sixth and seventh graders, one thing you should know is to expect the unexpected. One day you can be on top of the world and the next you could be falling faster than a speeding train. The world may seem against you, but in the end you will learn something that can’t be taught in a classroom.”
WarriorsBlew3-1
- “To finish the school year strong, I will try my best to maintain a 4.0 grade point average and to also be a better student in the classroom.”
- “I am preparing for high school now. I am setting good habits for myself such as doing homework as soon as I get home and going to sleep at a reasonable hour so that I can be as alert as possible during class the next day. I want to be well-rested before my brain gets filled up with wonderful knowledge.”
- “Sports will be lit. Also, there’s a lot more freedom for us in high school so I’m looking forward to that. And since we have a wide variety of classes we can choose from, I can make friends who have the same interests as me.”
- “I’ve never been to Great America before so I think it’ll be a very fun experience and the teachers are so much more cool when there’s no teaching needed to be done. Also, I really wanna give the graduation speech.”
- “I’m gonna miss the laid-back feel of being in eighth grade and being the oldest in the school. Words for the youngsters: develop good habits so in the future it benefits you.”
Not All Knights Wear Shining Armor
Alecia's fingers grazed over her bed's soft quilt, a small sigh escaping her lips as memories of the night before echoed through her mind. The frustrated yells of disapproval rang through her ears while bitter tears bit at the corners of her eyes. She pulled her hand away from the quilt, wishing for the sour memories to sink back into the depths of her mind. Turning away from her quilt sewn of poor materials, she faced the bulging suitcase filled with hopes for her future. Only men can fight, hissed a corner of her mind as she picked up her suitcase. Only men can pursue this dream which you wish to achieve. She shivered as her mind generated these thoughts and quickly turned her back on them in vain attempts to keep her hopes up high.
"You've waited forever for a chance to prove to the world that it's not only men who can fight," whispered Alecia as she crept over to her bedroom door. She silently pushed open the door and walked out into the hallway. Cringing at every creak the boards made when she took a step, Alecia made her way through the hallway and toward the front door. She grabbed her thin cloak from the corner it had been thrown in, and threw the door open. Almost instantly, an icy wind hit her in the face, blowing the door behind her shut with an unnaturally loud thud. Shivering, she pulled her suitcase closer to her chest and plunged into the cold depths the winter brought. The kingdom of Asgard always did have awful winters, thought Alecia as she walked, but this had to be one of the worst ones. The cold nipped at her bare hands, as well as her cheeks and nose, numbing them. Her breath could be seen in small clouds of white. Burying her chin in her chest, she continued her walk forward. The heavy suitcase slipped out of her frozen hands suddenly and she crouched down to pick it up. As she did this, a horse's low whinny resonated above her.
"Ho, there!" exclaimed the voice of a man. Looking upward, she saw a horse with coarse hair covered in ice. A man wearing Asgard's military uniform sat upon the horse, gazing down at her with kind eyes.
"What would a young lady such as you be doing out here in weather such as this?" asked the officer. Alecia stood up, pulling her cloak tighter around herself and walked past the officer. "Nothing which an officer such as yourself would be concerned about," she replied curtly. The horse and officer quickly came into view on her right once more. Shaking her head, she began to walk quicker through the cold, trying to get away from the officer.
"I would expect a gentleman like yourself to know when to leave a lesser lady such as myself alone," she said over her shoulder. Pulling her suitcase even tighter to her chest, she slowed down her pace and turned to face the officer. A golden badge on the officer's jacket gleamed in the morning rays of sunlight. She sighed and let a smile slip onto her solemn face.
"I'm going to visit my grandmother in the kingdom," Alecia told the officer, trying not to let too much sarcasm into her voice. Turning around once more with a huff of annoyance, she resumed her walk through the cold weather.
"I would never let a young lady such as yourself walk through the cold alone like this!" exclaimed the officer. Just as Alecia was about to spit frustrated words at the man, a hand slipped around her waist and heaved her up onto a horse's warm body. She glared at the officer's shoulders as the horse sprinted forward. Her lavender skirt flailed in the wind as her hair flew around her face.
"You really are stubborn aren't you, officer?" she told the man.
A light laugh came from the officer before he replied, "Indeed." Deep green pine trees dusted in blankets of snow flashed past her eyes. A silence fell between the two, only broken by the wind howling in their ears and the horse's gallop. Alecia's mind was abuzz. Thoughts whizzed around in her mind, and only a few managed to surface clearly. I'm actually going to do it! She thought. I'm going to make it to Asgard and become apart of the military!
"We're arriving at your destination," the officer said, breaking the silence. Alecia nodded her head and peeked her head over his shoulder, excited the see the large kingdom for the first time. Stone walls that seemed to stretch up to the sky could be seen. Large groups of townspeople could be seen around the outsides of Asgard's walls. A gasp of awe escaped her lips and the officer chuckled lightly.
"Thank you, sir," she carefully told the officer.
"Always a pleasure to help," the officer replied, "If you ever need help again, just find the old tavern on the south side of the kingdom. I'll be standing guard there." The horse's steady thumping slowed down and Alecia stared at the wall which sat in front of her. The officer gently swung down from the horse and offered his hand to her. She accepted his hand and hopped down. "Enjoy spending time with you grandmother," the officer told her before he turned away.
Stepping into the small crowd of townspeople, Alecia faced what she had dreamed of for years. Soldiers wearing heavy suits of armor lined the walls with large swords rested in sheaths at their sides. Solemn expressions matched the dark color of their armor. Strength seemed to radiate from the soldiers. The walls surrounding Asgard no longer had an intimidating feel. Banners of all kinds dotted large houses. Townspeople conversed on the streets while children ran about, playfully pushing each other around. Detailed spirals were painted on the cobblestone streets in pastel colors. Her gaze flickered everywhere, wanting to take in all the beauty. A small detail managed to catch her eye as she walked through the streets. It was a scroll with torn edges and blobs of ink covering small, dotted lines. A gasp of excitement came from her mouth and she rushed towards it.
"Are you looking to serve your kingdom and help good prevail over evil? Then perhaps the Kingdom of Asgard's forces might be for you!" read Alecia in excitement. Bending down, she reached into her leather suitcase and pulled out a small feather pen. Her hands were visibly shaking as she reached toward the scroll. Just as the tip of the pen touched the paper, voices caught her attention.
Turning her head to where the sound came from, she saw four older boys in a circle around a small shape in the center. She moved closer, and could now hear that the older boys were taunting the shape in the center. It became clear that it was a young girl in the center, cowering in fear. Without thinking, Alecia ran up to the circle. Holding tightly onto her suitcase weighed down by military books, she swung it at the boy in front of her. The suitcase struck him in the back, sending him stumbling sideways into the boy next to him, the second boy stumbling into the third one and so on. The boys toppled like dominoes. Alecia took advantage of their momentary shock to grab the girl and run. The two ran down a series of alleyways until they were a safe distance from the boys.
Once they caught their breath, the girl introduced herself as Felicity. "I was on my way to the doctor's officer to buy medicine for my brother, who is sick. These boys are thieves, and they were trying to steal my money. I don't know what would have happened if I couldn't get that medicine! Now I need to get to the doctor's office quickly. You have already done so much for me, but can you help me again?" asked Felicity. An idea flickered in Alecia's mind and she looked down at the younger girl.
"Do you know where the old tavern is?"
"Of course! That's where my dad is always on duty!" the young girl exclaimed happily. Felicity grabbed onto Alecia's hand and began running down streets.
As they approached the tavern, Felicity called out "Father! Father!" and one of the soldiers stationed out front turned to face them. It was Thomas Russel! The young girl ran up to her father in excitement and explained what had happened. Thomas' gaze flickered over to Alecia.
"This morning I thought you were just a helpless girl and I was the knight in shining armor. Now I see that you were the hero today, not me." Thomas said. "Is there anything I could ever do to repay you?" Possibilities of all kind filled her mind. This was her golden chance to join the military! All she needed to do was ask. Yet Alecia realized that the glory and pride today came not from fighting in big battles and proving her might to others. Today she learned that being a hero could come from being a person who tries best to do what is right every day. "Thomas, all I ask is to go home."
"You've waited forever for a chance to prove to the world that it's not only men who can fight," whispered Alecia as she crept over to her bedroom door. Anxiety by Hannah L.
Anxious.
Anxiety.
A chilling feeling attacking your brain.
A feeling where you can't follow your lane.
Signals which jolt, one way and another,
when you can't think like anything other.
Mind racing,
thoughts pacing,
running this and that way.
Never calming,
always beating,
never standing still.
Anxiety.
A chilling feeling attacking your brain.
A feeling where you can't follow your lane.
Signals which jolt, one way and another,
when you can't think like anything other.

"When the Snow Fell" by Tessa H.
To the ground fell the white snow.
Hanging onto the tree's by a thread were bright colored leaves. Onto my face the sun shone brightly.
At peace and still is the land Seen is nobody.
Silent was the land.
Waiting to be walked on was the endless trail.
Slowly the day ended.
Goodbye I had to say.
And I felt a sense of warmth inside as I walked away.

"The Story" by Liz D.
It is still just a story when creatures turn to clay
And the knives at your neck in the midst of burning day
Should a limit be kept on the souls in their graves
How much blood must be shed until a victor remains
The souls lit on fire will cry out for peace
And will not be heeded, lest victory cease
To rest her heavy head on the doorsteps of spring
And the tyrants will call for their people to sing
Their songs will be carried high into the night
Their hopes and their fears for the coming of light
The tyrant will bathe in the glorious praise
And hear the sweet voices that may soon end his day.
A fight for freedom will end in decay
As the martyrs and villains all rot in their graves
And ten thousand armies astride ebony steeds
Will stride to the judgement of their heinous deeds
Is it still just a story when thousands are dead
And the one lone survivor has fought and has bled
For a world that’s forgotten sacrifices he’s made
So the end of the victor comes at his own blade
And the knives at your neck in the midst of burning day
Should a limit be kept on the souls in their graves
How much blood must be shed until a victor remains
The souls lit on fire will cry out for peace
And will not be heeded, lest victory cease
To rest her heavy head on the doorsteps of spring

Spring Palette by Alix
Quiet and calm sits the water.
In the light glows the light green grass.
Covered with pink, orange, yellow, and green leaves are the trees.
Onto the light water reflects the colors from the trees.
In the light glows the blue water.
In the foreground glows a deep red tree.
Empty along the side of the lake sits the narrow walk way.
Under the surface ripples in the water.
A perfect spring moment creates the colorful landscape.
From the freshly cut grass sprout the colorful trees.

Different Sides by Clare L.
When someone's there, the cat shows its good side. So it turns when nobody is watching.
Into a dark mysterious place vanishes the good side. The black color covers the cat you watch.
With its light green eyes, it stares you right into your eyes. In walks someone.
Past you walks the black cat and right as you blink there is an adorable fluffy orange cat sitting next
to you. Into a new pair of ocean blue eyes your eyes stare.
This isn't the same cat as before you realize.
Down your back as you watch this new cat surrounds you, falls a shiver.

The Frosted Night by Bailey H.
Looks warm and cozy it looks in the cabin.
Colorful and dark is the night sky.
Very tall and wide are the trees.
Lighting up the sky are the stars.
Soft and cold looks the snow.
Small and bright is the cabin.
Frozen is the water.
White and green are the trees.
The snow is how thick?
Brownish orange are the trees.

Fall Angles by Fiona C.From all around me I could hear leaves crunch
Out from under the leaves, the grass peeked A warm smile my friend gave me Warm my soft boots kept me To my hair the leaves stuck A chill the cold air gave me For miles the fallen leaves went Through my ears the wind blew Very silent was nature The snow is where? |

Beautiful are the lights.
White is the snow.
White snow the forest is full of.
Many different colors there are.
Bright in the night sky the stars where shining.
Start to end soon will the winter.
Next year it will be back.
Just as beautiful as this year maybe it will be.
Come back will also the lights.
More beautiful than ever probably it will be.
